Pozuelo

The Village

Pozuelo is located in the region of the Sierra de Alcaraz, 32 km from the provincial capital. It has approximately 460 inhabitants. The basis of its economy is agriculture, especially wheat and barley. Pozuelo has a very varied gastronomy very rooted in tradition. Among them, we can highlight: Ajo de matadero, migas, rice with pigeon, rabbit and hare, gazpachos, various stews and gacha miga. We can also taste a multitude of desserts such as flowers, flakes, chocolate and cream fritters and wine rolls.

Pozuelo was one of the towns in the region where it is known for certain that the Inquisition was present. In 1516, the Holy Office prosecuted the tailor Martín de Burgos, because his wife was telling that she was married to a Jew and finally the craftsman was sentenced to 400 ducats for the joke.

Things to See

In the heritage of Pozuelo stands out first of all the Parish Church of San Bartolomé, from the XVIII century with austere and functional forms and a wide interior space of neoclassical type. Inside, there is a sensational piece of imagery sculpted by Roque Lopez that depicts the figure of St. Joseph. Also important is the Casa Palacio de los Coroneles, built after the battle of Almansa when the king granted some colonels land in the area. It is a house-palace of the XVIII century with two floors, large tower, carved cover and very good grille. The house has a courtyard inside, also with two floors, with Doric columns at the ends and Mudejar decoration. Finally, the Hermitage of San Bonifacio on the outskirts of the town, a hermitage that is visited in pilgrimage by all the locals during the month of May.

A natural resource that may be of interest to tourists is located 5 kilometers away. It is a place known as La Torca, consisting of a circular depression in the terrain with steep edges. Inside there is a cuckoo, a traditional agricultural construction.

Route of La Torca

Barely 5 km. from Pozuelo is located the place known as "La Torca", consisting of a circular depression in the terrain with steep edges. The place is accessed from the street of the Torca, located in front of the Plaza de la Iglesia, in a straight line, leaving the Municipal Cemetery on the left and continuing along the road.

An extraordinary cuco made of stone and hemispherical shape remains over time as a sample of traditional agricultural architecture. Its original function was to serve as a shelter for shepherds.
